Atlantropa: A plan to dam the Mediterranean

Another mega-scale project planned by Herman Sörgel and described in Engineers’ Dreams. People actually took the project seriously at
the time.
Still, who hasn’t looked at a map of the Mediterranean Sea and pondered something similar? His plans for creating a vast inland sea in Africa were just as grandiose as Atlantropa, but, in my mind, more fascinating and just down-right bizarre.

History Channel has done a 60-minute program on Atlantropa. Discusses most issues and has animation that models the construction. Watching today (02/21/08) 2 PM EST (US).

With the technology that we have now; if you set aside the political, environmental, economic and social ramifications; technically it is not impossible to materialize this vision.
Weather it is going to be a disaster or not is a different topic.
